For the fourth consecutive day, clashes continue between ISIS fighters and Kurdish forces, following an attack by jihadists on a prison in northeastern Syria.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights announced this Saturday, January 22, the killing of about 123 people, including 77 ISIS fighters and seven civilians.
The ongoing clashes additionally resulted in the deaths of 39 Asayish, prison guards, and anti-terror squad members.
The observatory said that “the number is greater than that recorded so far, as the real number is unknown until now, due to dozens of individuals that are still missing.”
As the search goes on, a large number of wounded, some of whom are in serious conditions, were also reported.
The recent ISIS attack on the Ghweran prison is described as the “largest and most violent” since the defeat of the organization back in 2019.
The terrorists attacked the large prison, located in the city of Al Hasakah, which houses thousands of ISIS members.
Kurdish forces are trying to contain this continuous attack for the fourth day in a row, with the support of coalition forces.
The prison and its surroundings witnessed violent clashes after midnight on Saturday and Sunday between Internal Security Forces and the Syrian Democratic Forces, in a continuous attempt to control the prison and end the presence of ISIS members in its vicinity, with the support and backing of the International Coalition.
Since coalition forces withdrew from the Levant back in 2019, a significant power vacuum overtook the area, with many carceral facilities with ISIS inmates left severely unsupervised.
This led to the escape of thousands of terrorists, many of which have rejoined the ranks of the terrorist ISIS organization.
