The volume of traffic through Tangier Med Port container terminals reached a record in 2021, exceeding 7 million containers, the Tangier Med Port said on Wednesday.

Global Tonnage reached: a record of 101 million tonnes of goods transported

101,054,713 tonnes of goods were transported for the first time in the Tangier Med port, up by 25% compared to 2020. This represents more than 50% of the overall tonnage trafficked by all ports in the country.

Road Traffic: TIR trucks exceeded 400,000 in 2021

Traffic also included 407,459 TIR trucks in 2021, which increased by 14% compared to 2020.

This traffic was mainly driven by the resumption of industrial exports as well as agro-exports, as an outcome of the good performance of the agricultural season.

New cars traffic: a significant rebound

429,509 new vehicles were transported at the two-vehicle terminals of the Tangier Med port in 2021, an increase of 20% compared to the previous year.

The increase in cars traffic is mainly explained by the transportation of 278,651 Renault cars, including 250,532 were set for export, in addition to a rise in exports of Peugeot-Citroën (PSA) vehicles, with 100,030 were exported.

Liquid bulk traffic: a rise in activity

Liquid bulk traffic increased by 9% compared to 2020, bringing up the total traffic to 8,744,900 tonnes of hydrocarbons transported.

Solid bulk traffic in growth

Solid bulk traffic recorded a total of 342,804 tonnes transported, up by 13% compared to 2020, driven by traffic of steel coils, wind blades, and grain.

Passengers traffic: in drop due to the country’s health instructions linked to the COVID-19 and the new Omicron variant

587,320 passengers passed through the Tangier Med port in 2021, down by 14% compared to 2020.

Marine traffic in progress

10,902 ships transited at the Tangier Med port in 2021, up by 12% compared to 2020.

During the past year, the port hosted nearly 929 mega-ships (size greater than 290 meters).

This northern-based port plays a key role in serving the national logistics competitiveness, said Tangier Med in the same balance sheet.

This new record in activity comes as a result of the strong partnership of Tangier Med port’s collaborators, including shipowners, local authorities, and the administrations concerned, Tangier Med’s balance sheet concluded.
