Morocco agreed to appoint a new German ambassador to succeed the former German ambassador, Goetz Schmidt-Prem, signaling the end of a diplomatic spat that lasted for months between the two countries.
The Embassy told Hespress in a statement that Moroccan authorities had already approved German diplomat Thomas Peter Zahneisen to lead the German representation in Morocco, but a current reshuffle of diplomatic positions in Berlin will likely see another name assigned to the North African country.
“A new accreditation request will be submitted to fill the post of Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Kingdom of Morocco in the near future,” a representative for the current embassy staff told Hespress.
“From the point of view of the German Federal Government, it is in the interests of both Germany and the Kingdom of Morocco that the expanded and good relations continue in all areas and that they return to their previous era before March of last year.”
Officials from both countries recently signaled readiness to overcome the diplomatic row that began in March 2021, with Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announcing cutting diplomatic ties with the European country due to a “deep misunderstanding” with Germany on fundamental issues of concern to Morocco.
Germany celebrated normalizing ties between Israel and Morocco under Abraham accords, however, the European country condemned the American recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara.
Morocco had condemned Germany’s position as hostile.
Germany said recently under new chancellor Olaf Scholz it supports the efforts of the Personal Envoy General Staffan de Mistura to achieve a political outcome that is fair and acceptable to all on the basis of the United Nations Security Council resolution, in which Morocco made an important contribution, adding that the federal government’s position in this regard has remained unchanged for decades.
Germany’s foreign ministry hailed the Economic and trade relations between the two countries as remarkable. In 2019, Germany was in 7th place in the Moroccan trade balance, and in the same year, it imported from Morocco 1.4 billion euros of goods and exported 2.2 billion euro
