Golden Globe Awards seeks diversity after criticism

The Golden Globe Awards, a star-studded Hollywood annual event that once drew millions of television viewers, was held this year as a live blog, following the surge of COVID-19.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) proceeded with its film awards on Sunday night without a telecast, nominees, a red carpet, a host, press, or even a Livestream.

Instead, members of the HFPA and some of its grant recipients met at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California to announce the winners on the organization’s social media.

Michaela Jaé Rodriguez won her first Golden Globe for her heartbreaking performance in the landmark series “Pose,” and became the first transgender actress to win a major acting award.

“This is the door that is going to open the door for many more young talented individuals,” she wrote on Instagram. “They will see that it is more than possible. They will see that a young Black Latina girl from Newark New Jersey who had a dream, to change the minds others would WITH LOVE. LOVE WINS.”

Steven Spielberg’s, “West Side Story,” won a number of awards, including best picture comedy or musical, best actress Rachel Zegler, and best-supporting actress Ariana DeBose.

Netflix’s gothic Western, “The Power of the Dog” was named best picture drama, along with other honors for Jane Campion’s direction and Kodi Smit-McPhee’s supporting performance.

Other winners included Will Smith for “King Richard”; Nicole Kidman for “Being the Ricardos”; and Andrew Garfield for “tick, tick…BOOM!”

Encanto, a Spanish animation film, won best non-English language motion picture, while the Japanese film, Drive My Car, a critics’ favorite, won best non-English language motion picture.

In addition, South Korean actor O Yeong-su received a Golden Globe for his role in Netflix’s Squid game as Player 001.

The awards follow criticism of the HFPA for its lack of racial diversity among its members and questions about whether close relationships with movie studios may have influenced nominations and winners.

NBC declined to broadcast the awards after Los Angeles Times reports revealed a lack of diversity within the secretive Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization that hosts the awards, and raised ethical concerns about its financial benefits.
