Moroccan Minister of Health, Khalid Ait Taleb has stated that its efforts to counter the pandemic have enabled the country to avoid bad occurrences for the health sector and for Moroccan citizens.
The minister has accredited this “proactive” management to the allocation of required and vital medical equipment, such as oxygen generators.
In answer to a written question from the Justice and Development Party parliamentary group, the minister said that “the Ministry of Health installed oxygen generators in 36 hospitals, which made it possible to bypass the pandemic waves in the years 2020 and 2021.”
The medical fluid network has also been rehabilitated in most hospitals, according to the official, who added that his ministry is currently focused on the initial stage of generalizing access to the generators.
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, demand for oxygen generators, including generators for home use, has increased significantly.
Countries such as Thailand and Laos have experienced severe shortages. Approximately 15% of COVID-19 patients worldwide are classified as ‘severe’ and require oxygen therapy, which involves a free flow of oxygen through the nostrils.
Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic exposed the oxygen gap faced by many low and middle-income countries. Oxygen therapy remains an inaccessible luxury for many patients in the poorest countries beyond urban hospitals and private providers.
The minister sees in the pandemic an opportunity to address challenges of medical equipment availability and care access, which he says his ministry will address, alongside other governmental bodies, to improve the national health sector.
