Moroccan Association of Human Rights call for recognition of the Amazigh new year

The Moroccan Association of Human Rights (AMDH) has requested the Head of Government to recognize the Amazigh new year “Idh Yennayer,” as an official national paid holiday, a symbolic initiative to acknowledge the Amazigh cultural identity in Morocco, according to the association.

“And as we tell you that we wrote, last year, as in previous years to the former Prime Minister and Minister of State for Human Rights and did not receive any answer, we ask you, once again, to establish the Amazigh New Year as a paid holiday, in the public and private sectors Similar to what is used in the Gregorian and Hijri calendars, as a symbolic initiative to recognize the Amazigh cultural identity of the Moroccan people,” said the Moroccan Association of Human Rights in a statement published Sunday on the council’s website.

The Moroccan Amazigh community’s plea for the official recognition of language, holidays, and heritage has been ongoing for decades, as its demands have multiplied with each successive administration.

Amazigh citizens and activists in Morocco are still awaiting official recognition from the newly elected Moroccan government, to announce the holiday, falling on January 13, as an official celebration.

Head of Government, Akhannouch, whose political identity was built on his Amazigh roots, has yet to fulfill his promise to provide Amazigh translation during parliamentary sessions, as his cabinet is silent concerning the absence of the official recognition of Idh Yennayer, which is expected this week.

Morocco’s previous government, under the leadership of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) has repeatedly stated that the decision to recognize the Amazigh new year rightly belongs to the King.
