Researchers in Mohammed VI University Hospital in Oujda said a 14 years old who suffered Myocarditis, a rare condition that causes inflammation of the heart muscle, is likely due to Covid-19 vaccine.
The research published December 30 said the 14-year-old teenager was admitted to the emergency department for a cardiogenic shock, ten days after he received anti-COVID 19 vaccination.
The 14-year-old child, who does not have a pathological history was admitted to the emergency room for extreme asthenia associated with a headache and fever reaching 40 C°.
“An etiological analysis was made and it came back without any particularities, leaving us relating the myocarditis to the vaccination,” said the study published in Annals of Medicine and Surgery.
The 14 years-old has recovered and returned to school, said Doctor Hamza Mimouni, member of the Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care at the Mohammed VI University Hospital of Oujda, who supervised the study.
Post-vaccine myocarditis is more common in children aged 12 to 21, according to a study by the American Heart Association.
The same study said myocarditis can weaken the heart and affect the heart’s electrical system that keeps the heart pumping regularly.
Of the 139 teens and young adults, ranging from 12 to 20 years of age, researchers studied after vaccination, nearly every case (97.8%) followed an mRNA vaccine, and 91.4% occurred after the second vaccine dose.
No death has so far been linked to myocarditis, with most patients hospitalized for two or three days.
