The International Grains Council (IGC) expects Morocco’s grain production to reach 11.1 million tonnes this year, up from 3.4 million tonnes in the 2020-2021 season.
IGC reports that the increase in production output is largely due to robust wheat production, which grew from 2.6 million tonnes last year to 8.1 million tonnes this year.
The quantity of barley produced also increased from 600,000 tons last year to 2.8 million tons this year.
Morocco’s grain imports are expected to improve due to an increase in grain production. Local production of grain will increase, reducing grain imports to seven million tons in 2020-21 from 8.4 million tons in 2020-21.
Given that wheat is the main staple food in Morocco, the country imports grain despite a robust harvest yield.
Crop yields in Morocco are largely dependent on the climate. Government data suggests that this year’s positive output is due in part to abundant rainfall, up by 32% from the previous year. The Chaouia, Abda, Haouz, Tadla, and Sais regions saw yields 44% higher than the 10-year average.
Moroccan officials predict that Morocco’s wheat imports will resume normalcy in 2021-22 with 4.5 million tons being imported.
