Tuesday 4 January 2022 - 13:23

The first deceased in connection with the Omicron variant passed away on Tuesday in Morocco, according to a statement from the Health ministry.

The deceased, a woman in her late 60s with underlying health conditions,  had not received the third shot of Covid-19 vaccines, said the statement.

Mouad Mrabet, a coordinator at the National Center for Emergency Operations of Public Health of the Ministry, said the number of deaths linked to the COVID-19 pandemic has begun to rise gradually, noting that the Omicron variant has begun to spread across Morocco, and is now dominating the total number of cases.

Seven confirmed cases of the Omicron variant are currently in intensive care, he added.

Recently on December 29, Health Minister Khalid Ait Taleb announced that the national authorities detected 76 cases of the new Omicron variant in the country, in addition to 246 suspected cases, and are awaiting test results
