USFP demands declassifying Mehdi Ben Barka records in light of recent espionage allegations

The Youth division of the Socialist Union party (USFP) in Tetouan is demanding the disclosure of classified information about the kidnapping and assassination of Mahdi Benbarka, following a report from british newspaper “The Guardian” claiming the Moroccan leftist political icon was a spy.

Describing him as “a national and international leader and revolutionary political activist,” the group is requesting French authorities to lift the secrecy on details related to the case, while also calling for the Moroccan government’s compliance, cooperation and “positive response” to “any request from the French judiciary” in charge of this case.

The Guardian based its report on declassified documents from the Czechoslovak intelligence services, which have shown that the former Moroccan socialist leader provided information to the Czechoslovak security service in return for substantial payments during the cold war.

The party’s stance comes at a time where the Federal Youth are gearing up to organise their eleventh party congress, saying it “will be a conference for renewal and continuity.”

The statement from the party has denounced the so-called “targeting of the Federal Youth in Tetouan,” and attempts to exclude the party’s young members from local electoral tickets and allowing the election of members who do not conscribe to the region’s jurisdiction.

The statement highlighted “the great role” the USFP has played in Tetouan during recent elections, mentioning its leadership of the electoral campaign despite “all struggles.”
