Security services in the province of Tarfaya stopped two migration attempts into the Canary Islands from Thursday through Friday.
Local authorities arrested most of those included in these attempts and seized the equipment used in order to cross into the Canary Islands.
According to local authorities, the first attempt was identified in the north of Tarfaya, arresting three women and a child among a group of migrants who fled, and the seizure of an inflatable boat, a motorcycle, and 4 barrels of gasoline.
The second attempt was thwarted on Friday morning by authorities on Bousseroual beach, near Akhfenir, and resulted in the seizure of an inflatable boat, 06 barrels of gasoline, and a motorcycle.
Recently, security services in the region of Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra have intensified efforts in order to combat irregular migration networks and human trafficking.
The UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM) said the number of people who died on the different maritime migration routes to Spain has reached a total of 1,255 in 2021, representing the highest number recorded.
According to IOM’s data, 2020 and 2021 saw a considerable increase in the number of migrants attempting to reach Europe via the Canary Islands.
