Spain’s government assures that “autonomous regions hold exclusive jurisdiction” over the fish farm case near the Chafarinas Islands.
In a response to a written question from a Popular Party (PP) MP, Pedro Sanchez assured that these aquaculture facilities fall exclusively within the prerogative of the autonomous regions.
For the VOX party in Melilla, the government of Pedro Sanchez “is lying” on the issue, stating that the management of the central government regarding this fish farm is “unforgivable.”
The party sees that the Sánchez government is “evading its responsibilities,” comparing the case to “any other illegal occupation of territory,” denounces the far-right political formation, while accusing the executive of “hiding information.”
The local section of VOX questioned the central government’s “integrity,” calling the farms “an attack on the country’s sovereignty.”
Back in November, the Spanish government issued a 20-day ultimatum for the destruction of a Moroccan fish farm near the Chafarinas Islands, a Spanish territory claimed by Morocco.
According to Spanish news outlet El Pais, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs delivered the note of protest to the head of the Moroccan Embassy in Spain.
Since then, the case has been relayed to local authorities, which right-wing parties VOX and PP denounced.
The VOX statement called the farm “just another Moroccan provocation to the Spanish government, adding to the long list of provocations that have not received a Spanish response in recent years.”
The PP considers it “absurd” that the government claims it has “no competence” in the matter.
