Moroccan trucks making a consumables delivery in Mali were attacked and shot on Monday, December 20, according to informed Hespress sources.
En route to deliver the goods to the United Nations Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), the trucks were exposed to several gunshots as they approached the city of Gao, north-east of the country.
The same sources revealed to Hespress that at least two trucks were shot at by alleged terrorists, who wore masks and rode motorcycles.
None of the drivers were hurt, as the accident did not result in any deaths or injuries.
The scene of the attack, at the bank of the Niger Valley, about 1,205 kilometers from the capital Bamako, is known as an active area for Al Qaeda attacks.
The persistently unstable security climate in Mali has been regularly plagued by alarming terrorist attacks.
Earlier this month, the United Nations Mission in Mali had announced the killing of seven Blue Beret soldiers, and the wounding of three others, following an explosion in central Mali.
Back in September of this year, two Moroccan truck drivers were killed, while another was injured in an attack by unidentified armed men 300 kilometers away from Bamako. The perpetrators have yet to be caught.
In the wake of such repeated attacks, Malian troops have been deployed to combat violent extremism in the Sahel region, but their efforts remain insufficient as they require “more predictable funding and broader international support,” according to Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the United Nations senior peace operations official.
