A South African court on Wednesday ordered former president Jacob Zuma to return to prison, effectively invalidating the medical parole he received in September.
Zuma’s medical parole is “declared unlawful and set aside”, read the ruling by High Court Judge Elias Matojane.
The former president’s lawyers immediately filed a motion to appeal following the ruling, meaning Zuma will not return to prison until his appeal is heard.
Zuma was jailed in July for 15 months for contempt of court, after refusing to testify in a corruption investigation.
His jailing sparked a wave of violent protests and riots in KwaZulu-Natal, that spread to Johannesburg in July, killing over 350 people in the deadliest violence in South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994.
