The Moroccan flag carrier Royal Air Maroc (RAM) began operating today flights to Turkey following a decision by Moroccan authorities to authorize flights from three countries, amid a wide travel ban.
Most recently, RAM said that it will launch special flights starting December 14 to 31 to 3 countries, including Turkey, Portugal, and the UAE as first destinations.
Previously, RAM said it will operate flights to eight countries, including Belgium, Canada, Ivory Coast, Spain, France, Gabon, Italy, and Senegal.
According to a source working within RAM, “the first planes actually flew towards destinations like France, Italy, Spain, and Senegal,” adding, “individuals who are going to travel won’t be considered as stranded when they will ask for a return to Morocco.”
“Currently, any Moroccan citizen has the right to leave to the desired destination, but the return is not on the responsibility of authorities,” he added.
“As for Moroccan stranded abroad, their return will take place starting tomorrow, with Turkey as the first destination, noting that this process is not easy and requires extensive coordination,” he said, adding, “Coordination is underway with other countries as well as airport administrations in order to speed up the process by issuing permits enabling the return of stranded people,” he specified.
Moroccan authorities announced a health protocol for Moroccan stranded abroad, including a negative PCR test taken within 48h before their departure, a seven-day quarantine in hotels designated for this purpose at the expense of the Moroccan government, in addition to another PCR test that will be conducted during the quarantine period every 48 hours.
As for the case of individuals who will test positive whether at the airport or at the hotel, they will be taken care of by the competent health authorities.
RAM’s launch of special flights comes as a result of the suspension of all flights starting November 29 for a period of two weeks, as part to avoid the surge of the new Omicron variant, with WHO describing it as a highly contagious virus of concern.
Last week, Morocco decided to extend the suspension of direct flights for passengers to a later date, according to MAP.
