In its first official reaction since the election of a new chancellor to succeed Angela Merkel, the German government said it was willing to overcome the repercussions of the diplomatic crisis with Morocco that lasted for months.
The official website of the German foreign ministry published today Monday an article untitled, “Germany and Morocco: bilateral relationships,” underling the federal government support for Morocco’s development in recent years.
“Germany supports Morocco’s modernization process and given the volume of its commitments, namely nearly 1.2 billion euros in 2020, it is one of the main bilateral donors.”
The article, which came in the aftermath of the appointment of a new government in Germany, tackled the Sahara conflict that raised tensions between the Kingdom and the European country earlier this year.
In March 2021, Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced cutting diplomatic ties with the European country due to a “deep misunderstanding” with Germany on fundamental issues of concern to the Kingdom of Morocco.
Germany celebrated normalizing ties between Israel and Morocco under Abraham accords, however, the European country condemned the American recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara.
Bourita condemned Germany’s position as hostile, while his German counterpart said that his country’s position from the conflict aligns with UN resolutions.
The new press issue said Germany supports the efforts of the Personal Envoy General Staffan de Mistura to achieve a political outcome that is fair and acceptable to all on the basis of the United Nations Security Council resolution, in which Morocco made an important contribution, adding that the federal government’s position in this regard has remained unchanged for decades.
Germany’s foreign ministry hailed the Economic and trade relations between the two countries as remarkable. In 2019, Germany was in 7th place in the Moroccan trade balance, and in the same year, it imported from Morocco for 1.4 billion euros of goods, and exported for 2.2 billion euros.
German-Moroccan development cooperation focuses on the areas of sustainable economic development and employment, renewable energies and water resources management. In 2020, Germany provided support to Morocco in managing the coronavirus crisis in the form of a massive emergency aid program, added the new published article.
Morocco will be pivotal partner for Germany in one case, which is the recognize over Western Sahara and the expulsion of the followers of the Polisario from its lands.
Germany is now evasive and the royal rhetoric was clear in defining relations with Western countries.
And upon it Morocco should not be stung twice from the same hole.
