Morocco’s security authorities have arrested about 10 people suspected of planning terrorist operations in several cities in recent days, ahead of new years celebrations.
The suspects had plotted attacks in cities including Oujda, Berkane, Tiznit, Azilal, Tetouan, and Casablanca.
As the New Year celebrations approach, Moroccan authorities increased their operations around the Kingdom, to prevent terrorist incidents during the celebrations.
Hespress newspaper sources said that the security operations are carried out in coordination between the Royal Gendarmerie, the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance, and the General Directorate of National Security.
The terrorist events in Casablanca on May 16, 2003, urged Moroccan authorities to develop a proactive policy based on confronting extremist ideology, to ensure the security of the Kingdom’s cities.
“The Kingdom’s security approach, through proactive action and strengthening vigilance mechanisms to confront the terrorist threat, enabled the dismantling of dozens of terrorist cells and aborting attacks and sabotage acts targeting public figures, vital facilities and tourist sites in a number of cities,” said the source.
Since 2003, security authorities have dismantled 210 terrorist cells and arrested more than 4,304 people, according to official data.
