The German embassy in Morocco is calling for the resumption of good diplomatic relations with Morocco, amid a row that’s lasted for months.
In a statement published on its Facebook page, the German diplomatic representation reacted to what it calls “false information” about Moroccan-German relations.
“In recent days, as in the past, false information about the ‘German-Moroccan’ relations have been published in various ways,” the post read.
The embassy is pointing to news reports about an intelligence report of Swiss researcher Isabelle Werenfels, which has been the subject of media speculation for days.
Various local media outlets have relayed the now-debunked news, attributing a report of Isabelle Werenfels from German think tank SWP, to the German Federal Foreign Intelligence Service (BND).
Media outlets claimed the report, titled “We do not want a new Turkey in the Western Mediterranean” adopts a very harsh tone towards Morocco, claiming Werenfels’s study warns the BND of Morocco’s “rising and threatening power in the region.”
The diplomatic representation assured that “Werenfels has absolutely nothing to do with the Federal Intelligence Service,” and that “she works at the Independent Research Centre for Science and Policy.”
In the post, the German embassy calls Morocco “a pivotal partner,” adding that “from the point of view of the federal government, it is in the interest of both countries to return to the traditionally good and broad diplomatic relations.”
“Germany is ready for a partnership that looks forward to the future on an equal footing, and the federal government clearly welcomes the normalization of relations between Morocco and Israel,” it adds.
Rabat severed ties with Germany back on March 1, 2021, citing “deep misunderstandings, among which is the Western Sahara issue.”
Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita told Parliament last week that relations with Germany must be based on “clarity and reciprocity” and “require action and effort.
