172 new mosques have been built this year in Morocco, among them 157 of private initiative, and another 15 financed by the government, with an allocated budget of MAD120 million.
The Minister of Islamic Affairs, Ahmed Taoufik held talks last week about related data during the Chamber of Councilors, whereby he announced more details about the 2022 Finance bill.
“In 2021, Morocco has allocated a budget of MAD853 million (£82 million) to manage and maintain mosques, as well as build new mosques across the country,” he said, adding, “especially in marginal neighborhoods in order to eliminate places of worship in poor conditions, both in urban and rural areas,” he specified.
On the other hand, 157 mosques were built as of September with the financing of individuals, noting that the country has around 51,000 mosques across its different cities.
Abroad, the government has built the Mohamed VI Mosque in Conakry, Guinea, restored a mosque that has the same name in Yamoussoukro, Cote d’Ivoire, and has built the Chenguit Mosque in Mauritania, according to EFE.
Worldwide, the number of mosques reached about 3.6 million, representing one mosque for every 500 Muslims, said the participants in the International Conference on Islamic Art, hosted by Dhahran in eastern Saudi Arabia, according to MAP.
