Tunisia’s Health Ministry announced on Friday the detection of the first Omicron case in a Congolese traveler returning from Istanbul.
“The PCR test showed that this Congolese traveler had the Omicron variant,” Health Minister Ali Mrabet said in a statement.
The PCR test result of the traveler who was sitting next to him on board was found negative.
According to the same source, the 23-year-old traveler arrived in Tunis on Wednesday, and all the travelers who were on board the same flight were contacted by Tunisia’s authorities in order to be tested.
Last Saturday, Tunisia’s Health Ministry announced some new health entry conditions for travelers to be effective starting December 1st, following the surge of the new Omicron variant, including a certificate proving vaccination, a negative PCR test taken within the past 48 hours, and a 10-day self-isolating.
As for travelers who want to access Tunisia with the aim to receive treatment, they must provide special authorization from the Health Ministry in addition to the other conditions, Tunisia’s Health Ministry press release added.
