Foreign minister Nasser Bourita announced that Morocco will host the upcoming ministerial meeting of the Coalition against Daesh next spring, as African nations race to counter Daesh’s growing use of drones and cryptocurrency in the continent.
West Africa and the Sahel are the most impacted regions in Africa, with 7,108 terrorist attacks registered in 2020, and with more than 1.4 million internally displaced due to ongoing confrontations, said Bourita who addressed via videoconference the participants in the Global Coalition against Daesh in Brussels.
The meeting ended with the creation of the Africa Focus Group, to be co-chaired by Morocco, alongside Italy, Niger, and the United States.
The Group comes as an “additional effort”, and is “timelier than ever” to counter the continued evolution of Daesh in Africa, where 27 African-based terrorist entities are registered on the UN Security Council Sanction list as terrorist groups and are responsible for 12,500 deaths in 2020.
The economic impact of terrorism on the continent during the last decade reached 171 Billion USD, which has had a direct impact on the political and social stability of African countries, said Bourita.
“We hold high hopes for the work of the Africa Focus Group as a platform to exchange views and perspectives to provide for a common understanding on specific Daesh-related threats and strategies on the continent, and to empower the African States to deter and interdict terrorist attacks, through building and reinforcing national capacities in a rational and concerted way,” he added.
