Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz received on Thursday the director of the Moroccan Liaison Office in Tel Aviv, Abdel Rahim Bayoudh, at the Israeli Defense Ministry headquarters.

“It was a pleasure to host today the head of the delegation of the Kingdom of Morocco in Israel, Abdel Rahim Bayoudh,” the Israeli official said in a tweet.

The two officials discussed the details of Gantz November’s visit to Morocco, in which the Israeli official signed a defense memorandum with his counterpart Abdellatif Loudiyi, Delegate Minister in charge of the National Defense Administration.

The signed agreement does not stipulate specific deals, but it does allow Israeli defense companies to do business with the kingdom, according to the spokesman of Israel’s defense minister.

“We look forward to expanding the great relations between our two countries,” added Gantz on Twitter.

Alongside the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Sudan, Morocco normalized ties with Israel, in 2020, under the mediation of Donald Trump’s administration.

The Israeli liaison office in Morocco was inaugurated, in August 2021, during Israeli foreign minister Yair Lapid’s visit to Rabat, as he signed three cooperation agreements with his counterpart Bourita.

Liaison offices between Morocco and Israel existed but were closed after the second Palestinian Intifada in the 2000s.

During his visit to Kingdom, in August, Israeli foreign minister Yair Lapid inaugurated the headquarters of the Israeli liaison office in Rabat, as he signed three cooperation agreements with his counterpart Bourita.

The renewal of Moroccan-Israeli ties coincided with Trump’s government officially recognizing the Moroccan sovereignty over Sahara territory, with Biden’s office keeping up with the decision.
