Saudi Arabia announced on Wednesday that it detected the first case of the new Omicron variant, in a citizen coming from a North African country.
Saudi’s Health Ministry official announced the detection of this case, stressing that “epidemiological measures were carried out, including the monitoring of the situation of the infected individual as well as his contacts, and they were isolated,” he added.
World Health Organization (WHO) said South Africa’s new Omicron variant is a highly transmissible virus of concern.
Many countries began to ban travel in order to avoid the surge of Omicron variant, including Morocco.
Recently, Saudi Arabia’s Interior Ministry announced that direct flights with six countries will resume starting this Wednesday, December 1st, namely with India, Pakistan, Egypt, Indonesia, Brazil, and Vietnam, following the recent decline in COVID-19 cases, pushing the country to ease restrictions on travel as well as public gatherings, but made the decision way before the surge of the Omicron variant.
Additionally, Saudi Arabia began allowing fully vaccinated people to visit Mecca and Medina starting October 10, and then lift most of its COVID-19 restrictions from October 17, according to the State News Agency.
