Moroccan football veteran Mbarek El Filali passed away on Saturday at the age of 66, according to the Moroccan Royal Football Federation (FRMF).
Born in 1955, El Filali passed in France, following a long battle with illness.
The late football star was known to the sporting community as El Filali Sghir (little El Filali), a nickname meant to distinguish him from his older brother, one of Morocco’s 1970 Mexico World Cup stars.
El Filali’s career was marked by a Botola title with the Oujda Mouloudia Club (MCO) in 1975, in addition to ranking third with the official Moroccan selection during the African Nations Cup in 1980, during which he was considered one of the best defenders in the continent for his speed and physical form.
