Morocco’s stockpile of Covid-19 vaccines stands at 13 million doses, which health officials say is sufficient to vaccinate all those that have not yet received their jabs, but fears of a new wave remain amid low vaccination turnout and the emergence of what seems to be Covid’s worst mutation in southern Africa.
A health official, who was not to speak publicly, told Hespress Morocco’s stock of vaccines could enable the 4.5 million unvaccinated citizens to receive the two doses as well as cover booster shots for significant numbers.
The same spokesman denounced low turnout at vaccination centers, stressing that so far only 27 percent of those over 65 years old received the third dose.
Those who have not taken their vaccine doses are driving up concerns over stagnation in the national vaccine campaign that health professionals bet on during the winter season.
The Scientific Committee had previously warned in a statement to Hespress EN that “the risk of infection or reaching critical cases remains possible.” This becomes particularly alarming with the emergence of the more dangerous and fast-spreading Omicorn variant that’s ravaging across Southern Africa and poses a potential threat in Europe.
The mutant is still mysterious, with little data coming from South Africa, health professionals are still wary of what to expect next.
As recently as this Thursday, Morocco suspended air travel to and from France due to the alarming increase in cases, while tightening air and seaport arrival security.
Morocco had already closed its borders with three other European countries on October 20, namely Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
Rabat cited its hopes to “preserve Morocco’s achievements in managing the COVID-19 pandemic and to face the deteriorating health situation in some neighboring European countries.”
