Some 230 migrants seeking to cross to the Canary Islands, from sub-Saharan Africa, were arrested Thursday in Laayoune and Tarfaya, local authorities said.

the Royal Navy rescued Thursday evening south of the port of Laayoune an inflatable boat, with 59 sub-Saharans on board, including the body of a Senegalese citizen and 8 women and 2 minors.

The security services and local authorities have foiled the same day, near the village Amegriou (Tarfaya province), an attempt to emigrate illegally to the Canary Islands involving 120 sub-Saharans, 30 of whom were arrested, the same sources added.

Two cars carrying 16 individuals from sub-Saharan Africa were also apprehended Thursday near Laayoune.

The migrants, who were attempting a crossing to Spain, were taken to the nearby police station for investigation.

In Laayoune, 35 individuals who were getting ready to set sail were arrested.

Hundreds of migrants, mostly citizens of sub-Saharan Africa, have been arrested in recent weeks in the region Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra, amid an increase in arrivals to the Canary Islands.
