Morocco witnessed a clear regression in terms of gender equality and women’s rights as violence against women was raised amid the pandemic, says Oxfam Morocco.
“There is an alarming rise in violence against women during the past months, especially physical, psychological, sexual, economic and domestic ones, related mainly to the economic insecurity of families worsened by the quarantine period,” said Oxfam in a statement.
Morocco recorded 16,590 cases of violence against women in 2020, according to a report by the services of the royal gendarmerie. The recorded cases concern 16,947 victims, including 1,106 minors.
Gender-based violence increased by 31.6% during the quarantine period according to the federation of women’s rights League.
Between assault and battery, forcible confinement, homicide, attempted homicide, and domestic physical violence, the number of physical violence cases stands at 7,916 compared to 8,358 in 2019.
Under the slogan “We will not be silent, and we don’t accept violence,” the independent charitable organization called for building more equal and resilient societies to emerge from this crisis and achieve an equal future.
“We need a global action to remind people that everywhere in the world inequality between women and men is the cause and effect, at the same time, of the different forms of violence against women and girls,” said Oxfam in a statement.
