Morocco’s health ministry issued a statement warning of the misuse of antimicrobial medication, in celebration of the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, from November 18 to 24,
Misusing antimicrobials (antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, and antiparasitics) leads bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites to develop resistance mechanisms to these drugs.
Antimicrobial resistance means that bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites no longer respond to medication, making infections much harder to treat, resulting in severe illness and sometimes, death.
The misuse of antimicrobials is most prevalent in cases where humans and animals are unnecessarily given these medications, in addition to the lack of respect for medical prescriptions, the health ministry’s statement added.
According to data from the World Health Organization, high rates of resistance against antibiotics frequently used to treat common infections have been observed worldwide.
The ministry of health recommended that citizens rely more on prevention to avoid infections, including good hygienic practices and vaccination, in addition to avoiding self-medication and respecting the doses and duration prescribed with antimicrobials.
