The United Arab Emirates has been chosen to host the 28th climate conference in 2023, following the country’s progress in sustainable development.

The United Arab Emirates, which has just announced its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, has been chosen as the host country for COP28.

If the UAE’s goal of carbon neutrality is going to be achieved within the next 30 years, rendering it the first country in the Middle East and North Africa to hit such goal considering that the UAE is a world-class oil and gas nation.

The UAE’s progress has begun since signing up to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals framework upon its establishment in 2015.

For this year, the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) is taking place in Glasgow, the UK, starting October 31 to November 12.

The COP26 summit is an occasion to bring parties together in order to speed up action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, including adopting a plan to protect communities and natural habitats as well as securing a global net-zero by mid-century.

Last month, the US Climate Envoy John Kerry said that Egypt had been selected as the nominee to host the COP27 UN climate conference, due to take place next year.

Each year, a country representing a different region of the world takes over the presidency of the Conference of the Parties (COP), in which the meeting tends to be hosted in the selected nation for the same purpose.
