Miss Universe’s organizers announced on Wednesday that Fatima-Zahra Khayat will no longer represent Morocco in the 2021 Miss Universe beauty pageant because of an accident.

The 26-year-old had to relinquish her title due to a sprained ankle, preventing her from representing Morocco.

“Khayat’s disability won’t allow her to be in optimal conditions in the upcoming weeks,” said Miss Universe Morocco’s organizers on Instagram.

A ceremony was held on Wednesday afternoon, whereby Khayat crowned her first runner-up, the new Miss Universe Morocco, Kawtar Benhalima.

The Miss Universe beauty pageant is set to take place on December 12 in Israel, with Morocco participating after a four decades-long absence.

The 70th edition of this event will be held in Haifa with the participation of 75 countries.
