The justice and development party announced, yesterday, Saturday, the return of Abdelilah Benkirane, the former party’s Secretary-General, to the leadership of PJD, following the extraordinary party assembly .
Benkiran’s election came after five hours of discussions, votes and debates among the members of the Exceptional National Congress of the Justice and Development Party.
A number of PJD’s members, who resigned from General Secretariat after the disastrous party’s results in September 8 elections, as Najib Boulev, Bassima Hakkaoui, and Reda Boukmazy, took the floor, during the conference, to protest Benkirane’s return, and support Abdelaziz Al Ammari, another leader in the party, to take the position, “as a non-confrontational organizational figure who can unite the party and prepare the PJD for the ordinary congress.”
On the other hand, most of the more than 70 interventions called for bringing back the leadership of Benkiran.
The General Secretariat’s proposed before to postpone the party’s regular conference for only one year, which Benkiran publicly rejected in a live broadcast on his Facebook page as he urged the party’s members to choose between his return and the adoption of the General Secretariat’s decision backed by a majority of the National Council members.
The proposal to postpone the conference for one year only received the support of the members of the General Secretariat and the National Council, but the rest of the conferences distributed to 80 regional headquarters rejected it by 901 votes against 374 votes in favor.
The growing rage among members of PJD after the September 8 election’s defeat, the disappointment in Saad Eddine El Othmani’s leadership during the past years and the endorsement of Benkiran by members of the party’s National Council abroad, are all factors that lead to the win of Benkirane by 1012 votes, followed by for Abdelaziz Al-Amari (221) votes Abdallah Bouano (15 votes).
After five years of exclusively communicating through handwritten notes posted on Facebook, the former head of government Abdelilah Benkiran, who left the national political scene in 2016 after failing in reaching a governmental coalition agreement with Aziz Akhannouch, the leader of RNI, came back today to lead the opposition minority against Akhannouch’s cabinet.
