Poland and Morocco are set to launch a research project in the region of the ancient city of Volubilis, according to a press release from the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Rabat.
An archaeological mission set for October 29 led by Professor Adam Łukaszewiczs in order to conduct surveys and review the condition of the site, along with the presence of the Polish Ambassador Krzysztof Karwowski.
The two parties have already signed a scientific cooperation agreement on July 7, 2021, in the Polish Embassy in Rabat, aiming to study Roman military presence in the province of Tingitane Mauretania.
The major goal of this cooperation is to lead important discoveries in order to fill out the gaps in knowledge on the functioning of the Roman border defense system in North-West Africa.
The results of this research will also allow the development of the site of Volubilis, classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site as well as its promotion on an international level.
So far, two seasons of preliminary research have been organized between the two countries with promising results.
Volubilis is considered indefensible and was abandoned by the Roman imperial authorities in 285.
The site was a Christianized urban community at first, then saw the presence of Muslim communities for seven centuries. The Idrisid dynasty was founded there in the 7th century.
In the 11th century, the site was abandoned and the population was transferred 5 km away to the city of Moulay Driss Zerhoun.
