Colombia will open a consulate in the Sahara, becoming the second latin American country after Haiti to extend diplomatic services to the disputed territory, in recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty.
The announcement was made today in a press statement by the vice president of Columbia Marta Lucía Ramírez Blanco, alongside the Moroccan foreign minister Nasser Bourita, part of talks she is holding on a Morocco tour until November 1.
The VP said her country plans to open several consulates across Morocco aiming to consolidate ties with the north African country and facilitate access to local markets.
“We discussed several topics and reviewed a series of sectors in which cooperation must be consolidated, such as industry, infrastructure and agriculture, an area where both countries have an important vision,” she said.
In the agricultural sector, Morocco and Colombia agreed to launch two integrated programs in the field of agriculture (irrigation systems, soil mapping, fertilizers, etc.) in two Colombian regions to be identified in the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, announced the Vice President.
“It is also important to develop our cooperation in renewable energy because Morocco has experienced a very important development in this area,” she said.
