Australia eyes offsets to meet net-zero GHG 2050 target ahead of UN climate summit

Ahead of the U.N. climate summit in Glasgow, Australia, one of the world’s top producers of coal and gas plans to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said.

However, no legislation will be issued but instead, the country will address consumers and companies to drive emission reductions.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison affirmed his decision in an opinion piece published today in Australian News Corp vowing he will commit to the 2050 net-zero goal but refusing to strengthen 2030 emission reduction.

This announcement comes just days before Morrison heads to Glasgow for next month’s United Nations COP26.

This target is expected to be achieved through technology development, with the government investing USD20 billion (USD15 billion) which aims to reduce the costs of technologies such as clean hydrogen and increase their use, Morrison said.

“I said we would meet and beat this target and we will,” Morrison wrote adding “We want our heavy industries, like mining, to stay open, remain competitive and adapt, so they remain viable for as long as global demand allows,”

Australia has previously made a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 26-28 percent on 2005 levels by 2030, a target the country will “meet and beat,” Morrison claims.

However, as 2030 is approaching Morrison expressed that Australians “will not be lectured by others who do not understand Australia” adding that his country “will also not be breaking the pledge we made at the last election by changing our 2030 emission reductions targets.”

During his speech, the Australian PM announced that further details will be given on the Australian way of reducing emissions targeting net zero by 2050, once at Glasgow, Scotland.
