Germany’s auto giant BMW will start banning internal combustion engine (ICE) cars starting 2030, replacing them with electric vehicles, said BMW’s CEO, Olivier Zipse, according to Reuters.
“We will be ICE-ban ready. If a region, a city, a country gets the idea of banning ICEs, we have an offering,” Zipse said in a conference near Stuttgart, according to the same source.
BMW expects 50% of global car sales to be electric vehicles by 2030, and has launched its BMW i4 range with an eDrive40 version.
Last August, President Joe Biden said he wants to make 50% of all new cars sold in the US electric by 2030, pushing long-term aggressive policies to cut on vehicle emissions that are contributing to the heating of the planet worldwide.
European and Japanese carmakers, including BMW, Honda, Volkswagen, and Volvo also backed the goal in order to save the planet while producing environmentally friendly cars.
Germany said before it wants to be carbon neutral by 2040, while the EU set in motion proposals seeking to end new petrol and diesel vehicles in 2035.
