Israel has appointed David Govrin to be the country’s permanent ambassador to Morocco, the diplomat announced on Twitter.

The 58-year-old diplomat speaks fluent Arabic, and served as the ambassador to Egypt from 2016 to 2020.

Govrin was the head of the diplomatic mission in Rabat for the past two months, and will now run the upgraded embassy.

In August, Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid inaugurated Israel’s Liaison Office in Rabat, after the normalization of ties between the two countries in December 2020.

The agreement with Morocco came as a part of a wave of diplomatic normalization between Israel and other Arab states, including the UAE, Bahrain and Sudan.
