Algeria reassures Spain that will ensure gas supply

The Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said Algeria had ensured his country it will continue supplying it with gas despite tension with Morocco.

After his meeting with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Thursday, the head of Spanish diplomacy told the press, “Algeria is a first-class energy partner for Spain. It has always been a reliable partner in fulfilling its obligations,” quoted by Spanish agency EFE.

He said Spain is “always ready to work for a supply that benefits all parties.”

Albares’s visit to Algiers comes ahead of an interview he arranged with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, according to Spanish agency EFE.

Algeria said it was able to provide gas to Spain through the Medgaz pipeline, excluding Morocco and the Maghreb-Europe pipeline that runs across the Kingdom and plays a key role in supplying gas to Morocco.

The meeting also focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and expanding it to include the sectors of renewable energy, agriculture and shipbuilding, according to a statement issued by the Algerian presidency.

Algeria had threatened to cut off the gas pipeline that crosses Moroccan territory on its way to Spain on October 31, which means for Morocco a loss of the annual percentage of 7% of the gas transported.

For Spain, this may mean an expected reduction in supply, which in turn will make prices even higher, coinciding with the potential energy crisis to appear this winter in Europe.
