Algerian president orders closure of Algerian air borders to Moroccan planes

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune ordered on Wednesday the closure of his country’s airspace to all Moroccan planes bearing a Moroccan registration number.

The decision was made following a meeting of the Supreme Security Council, chaired by Tebboune, in his capacity as President of the Republic, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defense, according to a statement by the Algerian presidency.

“The meeting was devoted to studying developments on the borders with the Kingdom of Morocco, in view of the continuation of provocations and hostile practices,” said the statement.

The Council decided to immediately close Algerian airspace on all Moroccan civil and military aircraft, which have a Moroccan registration number, starting today, Wednesday.”

Algeria had accused Morocco of being complicit in the deadly forest fires by claiming the country supported independence movements MAK and Rachad, cited as one of the reasons of cutting ties with Morocco.

Relations between Morocco and Algeria have been fraught in the past decades, mainly over the territory disputed by the Polisario Front, an Algerian-backed separatist movement.

Despite tensions, Morocco said it would remain a credible and loyal partner to Algeria and will continue to act to develop inter-Maghreb relations.
