The National Interprofessional Cereals and Legumes Office (ONICL) has launched two calls for tenders for the import of wheat from the USA and the UK, under the Free Trade Agreement, in a bid opening set for September 21 for both calls for tenders.
The first call for tenders covers 363,636 tonnes of soft wheat from the USA, and the second covers 6,191 tonnes of durum wheat from the UK and Northern Ireland, under preferential tariff quotas.
This call comes as a result of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) monthly report released last Friday, raising the estimate of global wheat production for 2021- 2022.
The USDA noticed an increase of 3.4 million tonnes from August to 780.3 million, while domestic uses and exports are expected to increase, also global stocks, to amount from 4.2 million tonnes to 283.2 million at the end of 2021-22. As for the exchanges, they remain strong as well as the prices.
The second call for tenders concerns the allocation of the preferential tariff quota granted by Morocco to the UK and Northern Ireland for 2021, within the framework of the Agreement on the association between the two parties related to a quantity of 6,191 tonnes of durum wheat.
On the international market, wheat prices currently reach 280 dollars/tonne, and the wheat production record in 2021 has led to an increase in stocks, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
In 2020, Morocco’s wheat imports increased by + 46.3% (+ MAD4.272 billion ), according to the same source.
