China said it will provide an additional 100 million Covid-19 vaccine doses to developing countries by the end of 2021 and donate USD100 million to the global Covax initiative.
The decision was announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping who said at the 13th BRICS summit that his country will seek to provide a total of two billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines to the world by the end of this year.
‘At present, the COVID-19 pandemic is still spreading around the world, and the path to global economic recovery is still bumpy and tortuous,’ he noted.
He called on BRICS countries to strengthen public health cooperation in the spirit of solidarity, step up political responsibility, support each other’s COVID-19 response, and share relevant information and control experience.
‘We need to promote global solidarity against COVID-19, join forces to tackle the pandemic, uphold a science-based approach to tracing its origins, and oppose politicization and stigmatization,’ he said.
China has so far provided more than one billion doses of vaccines to more than 100 countries and international organizations, the president added.
