Costs to contain the Covid-19 pandemic in Morocco reached about MAD32 billion out of the Covid-19 fund since the state of health emergency was enforced in March 2020.

MAD4.4 billion was spent between January and June 2021, as the country raced to purchase vaccines hoping to cut Covid-19 expenses by achieving herd immunity, according to a report by the ministry of the economy on microeconomic spendings for 2020-2024.

Morocco has Africa’s highest vaccination rates, with 41,9 percent of its population vaccinated, mostly with the Sinopharm vaccine, costing MAD360 for two shots to buy from Chinese manufacturers.

The relief fund, initially valued at MAD33 billion, drew from the donations of public sector companies and individuals to finance health infrastructure and costs of restrictive measures on the economy and workers’ wages.

The National Social Security Fund recently approved a contribution of MAD1 billion and MAD378 million to the fund, and private donations are still open, as costs of the pandemic continue to spike.

The country’s fiscal deficit reached 7.6% in 2020, with hopes it could be curbed at 6.3% in 2021, compared to the ambitious pre-COVID-19 target of 3%.
