The US military confirmed that twin explosions occurred outside of Kabul airport in Afghanistan, as US aircrafts continued evacuations.
Preliminary reports indicate that at least 60 Afghans and 12 US soldiers were killed.
The bombings come after several reports from US and allied officials of intelligence that suicide bombers were threatening to attack the airport.
According to a US general, the attack was by the group affiliated with the Islamic State in Afghanistan. The US expects further attacks on Kabul by the IS, but says evacuations will still continue, AFP reports.
The same source added that the US is determined to retaliate against the IS for the attack on Kabul airport.
