Morocco to implement national roadmap 2021-2050 for natural gas development
Thursday 19 August 2021 - 19:00

The ministry of energy, mining, and environment announced Thursday the implementation of the national roadmap for the development of natural gas 2021-2050.

The roadmap lays the groundwork for the development of natural gas in Morocco for industrial purposes initially, followed by domestic purposes, to eventually integrate the needs for electricity generation.

The first step of the roadmap would be the implementation of a regulatory framework for the natural gas sector, the expansion of the National Electricity Regulatory Authority’s powers to regulate the sector, the establishment of a Moroccan Natural Gas Transmission System Operator, as well as the regulation of the free import of natural gas transmission, storage and distribution activities.

The second step would be to assess demand through the evaluation of current consumption and that of recent years, in addition to the potential of future demand that could develop rapidly following the switch of industry to this cleaner more competitive fuel.

The third step concerns the evaluation of various options for supplying natural gas and liquified natural gas (LNG), through pipelines, floating storage and regasification units, onshore terminals or multidirectional flows, while deploying a new transport network to link all the components of the gas plan and develop its own capacities for receiving and storing natural gas and LNG for security of supply reasons.

This roadmap aims to create a regulated market for natural gas to allow access of industrialists and consumers to the competitive energy, as well as the improvement of the competitiveness of Morocco’s industrial exporters.

Natural gas is well suited to be used by Morocco in a bid for energy transition, improving industries’ competitiveness and decarbonizing the economy to support renewable energy.

Analyses of national and international natural gas supply and demand show that the market would be primarily driven by demand from power generation and industrial sectors, MAP reports.

The ministry of energy estimates that demand for Morocco’s natural gas should reach more than 3 billion cubic meters in 2040.
