NASA set to explore asteroid that has enough gold to bring down global economy
Sunday 8 August 2021 - 16:26

NASA is launching a study on an asteroid worth more than $10,000 quadrillion, containing precious metal that everyone on Earth would be a billionaire if the asteroid was divided among mankind.

Psyche 16 will be the primary focus of NASA’s project, which is set to launch in August 2022. Its value is worth several times the total global economy.

The celestial body, called Psyche after the Greek goddess of soul, was first identified by Annibale de Gasparis, an Italian astronomer in 1852. It orbits around the sun in a region between Jupiter and Mars that contains over a million such rocky bodies.

Its whopping value is attributed to its  rare metals, considered precious on Earth,  including cobalt, gold, iridium, platinum, and rhenium.

Nasa scientists will launch the mission in 2022, and reach the asteroid in 2026-2027.  The celestial body will be mapped and studied, driving the curiosity of many as to whether it could be mined.

But expects advise against digging the asteroid for treasures, because if they were brought back to earth, the metals, particularly gold will be so abundant  causing prices to drop and the global economy to collapse.
