A magnitude 2.8 earthquake struck Ain Chkef, near Fez, early Tuesday morning, according to Morocco’s National Institute of Geophysics, which described the tremor as normal seismic activity.
The earthquake was recorded at approximately 6:30 a.m. in the Moulay Yacoub province of the Fez-Meknes region.
An institute official told Hespress that neither residents nor local authorities had contacted the agency about the tremor, suggesting it was not widely felt.
A separate seismic monitoring application estimated the magnitude at 3.1 and placed the earthquake at a depth of approximately seven kilometres.
The institute said similar tremors had previously been recorded in the area.
In May, institute director Nasser Jabour reported approximately 16 earthquakes across northern Morocco over three days, describing seismic activity as relatively steady.
He linked the increased activity to changes in geological stress following the devastating September 2023 Al Haouz earthquake, which affected faults across Morocco.
