Morocco imported 75,060 tons of ammonia from China between January and September 2026, as disruptions to global fertilizer supplies pushed the country to seek alternative sources, according to a recent report by the Attaqa platform.

The imports were worth $46.5 million, with shipments peaking in May at 51,050 tons valued at $29 million, making Morocco China’s largest destination for ammonia exports that month.

The volume accounted for around 68% of Morocco’s total ammonia imports from China during the nine months.
The increase came amid disruptions to global fertilizer supplies caused by the Middle East crisis and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for ammonia and sulfur shipments.

Morocco relies entirely on imports to meet its ammonia needs, with around 40% of supplies coming from the Middle East.

After falling to 18,800 tons in June, Morocco’s ammonia imports from China are set to rise again, with a 30,000-ton shipment of liquid ammonia leaving Nanjing for Morocco on October 13, marking the start of a direct shipping route between the two countries.

The kingdom seeks to reduce its reliance on imported ammonia as rising input costs and supply chain disruptions pressure OCP Group, which needs around two million tons of ammonia annually to produce fertilizers.

Under its $13 billion Green Investment Plan for 2023–2027, OCP aims to produce one million tons of green ammonia annually by 2027 and three million tons by 2032.

The platform added that Chinese companies are also involved in Morocco’s plans to develop its green ammonia industry.
Energy China signed a memorandum of understanding with a Saudi partner and Morocco’s Gaia Energy to establish a plant in southern Morocco with an annual production capacity of 1.4 million tons.

Meanwhile, Guofu announced a $30 million investment in a factory producing electrolyzers with a capacity of one gigawatt. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027.
