The United States will provide consular services in Laayoune for the first time in November, extending its administrative presence to Morocco’s southern provinces as part of a four-city outreach program.

The US Consulate General in Casablanca announced that its American Citizen Services unit will offer passport and notarial services in Marrakech in October, Laayoune and Ouarzazate in November, and Oujda in December.

American citizens must request appointments by email, specifying their names, accompanying individuals and required services. The consulate will confirm appointment dates and locations individually.

The initiative follows Washington’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara in December 2020 and subsequent efforts to expand its engagement in the region.

In July, US Ambassador Duke Buchan III visited Laayoune to announce American support for a green hydrogen and ammonia project and reaffirm Washington’s position on Moroccan sovereignty.
