Morocco’s national futsal team coach, Hicham Dguig, said on Sunday in Rabat that he and his players are determined to defend their continental title at the Africa Futsal Cup of Nations (AFCON), scheduled to take place in Morocco from October 12 to 21.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference Dguig said the national team is fully prepared to mount a strong campaign and retain the title on home soil. He added that “playing in front of our fans can create pressure, but it also provides the team with extra motivation to perform well in the competition.”
Regarding team selection, Dguig explained that his choices were based on players’ performances in international matches. He noted that the inclusion of four new players meant that one-third of the squad had been renewed, requiring more intensive preparation.
According to the national team coach, the opening match against Algeria will be difficult, particularly as the Algerian side is well prepared and has professional players competing abroad. “We have prepared accordingly to approach this tournament in the best possible way.”
For national team captain Soufiane El Mesrar, preparations have gone ahead under the best possible conditions, and the squad is ready to retain the continental title and maintain its leading position in Africa.
He noted that, as favorites, Morocco must prove its superiority on the pitch, regardless of the opponent, stressing the importance of winning the opening match against Algeria for the team’s prospects in the remainder of the competition.
