Three foreign tourists were rescued after floodwaters swept away their vehicle near Zagora on Friday, prompting authorities across southeastern Morocco to renew warnings against crossing flooded roads and riverbeds during storms.
The incident occurred in Ait Saoun, where the three tourists attempted to cross a bridge as water levels rose sharply following heavy thunderstorms, according to local authorities.
Their vehicle was quickly carried away by the current before the occupants were rescued. No deaths were reported.
Following the incident, authorities in Zagora, Ouarzazate and Tinghir stepped up warnings to residents, drivers and tourists as unstable weather continued across the region.
Officials urged motorists to obey road signs and instructions from emergency and security services and warned against attempting to cross wadis or ravines while they are flooded.
Authorities said the force of flash floods in southeastern Morocco can rise rapidly and become strong enough to sweep away even heavy vehicles, making apparently passable crossings particularly dangerous during thunderstorms.
The warnings come as parts of southeastern Morocco experience heavy and sometimes sudden rainfall, conditions that can produce rapid flooding in normally dry waterways and disrupt roads between rural communities.
Local authorities urged travelers to avoid unnecessary risks and follow instructions from intervention teams until weather and road conditions improve.
