Moroccan authorities arrested a 22-year-old man in Tangier on Friday on suspicion of supporting ISIS and preparing terrorist attacks in the country, the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations said Saturday.
The arrest was carried out by judicial police following intelligence provided by the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance, or DGST.
BCIJ said searches linked to the case uncovered electronic equipment, writings related to cyber intrusion methods and materials suspected of being intended for the preparation of explosives. The seized substances will undergo technical and scientific analysis to determine their composition and intended use.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect had allegedly conducted initial experiments involving improvised explosive devices while preparing possible attacks inside Morocco, according to the bureau.
The suspect was transferred to BCIJ custody under the supervision of prosecutors handling terrorism cases.
Investigators are examining the alleged plots as well as any potential links the suspect may have had with individuals or extremist organizations inside Morocco or abroad.
